The simplest bread recipe in the world (aka M’s microwave bread)

This is a recipe I perfected during one of my travels – when I found myself one morning with nothing but a microwave and some flour.

So here are the (only) ingredients you need:

  1. Flour
  2. Water

  1. Mix the flour and water in a microwave proof container. The consistency should be think – think pancake batter. Mix it well so that there aren’t much, if any, lumps.
  2. Microwave it on high for 10 minutes

That’s it!

Notes & tips

  • The flour can be of any type. I didn’t use all purpose flour, or any other specialist flour – just a normal bag I found at a local shop.
  • The heat in different microwaves can be different, so test with 10 minutes – that’s your baseline. Then depending on the state of your bread, increase or decrease the time and heat level. So, if your bread isn’t cooked through, increase the time and/or heat level, and vice versa. That said, I’ve tested that recipe in 2 different microwaves in two countries, and that timing and setting worked in both places, and with both models of microwaves.
  • You can add other stuff to the bread. Because I like spices and spicy food, I’ve experimented adding spices curry powder and chilli powder.
  • You can have it with anything. This bread (the basic, plain version) goes just as well with sweet things as it does with savory stuff.
  • Adding a bit of baking soda can make it fluffier/less dense (but I didn’t mind the density, so test the basic version first).
  • You can easily make it into a pancake version by adding egg(s).

That claim (simplest bread recipe in the world) isn’t made in jest by the way – I have looked around, quite a bit, but haven’t come across anything simpler. If you do know of one simpler than this, however, do share.

Try it out. And if you have any suggestions, let me know.

Enjoy the bread!
